Xena Private Data Hubs
Will a Xena private hub work for your data?
Xena is very flexible with regards to data type. You can load most types of genomic or phenotype data into UCSC Xena. That is to say, if we display it, you can load it.
Browse some examples on our datapages for TCGA Breast Cancer. Click in to a data type and scroll to the bottom to see what the raw file looks like. Also, here are some specific examples of the data we accept: a Phenotype File, and a Genomic File.
It is important that your data be formatted correctly.
While the format required is not complicated (see above), it does mean you will either need to have experience formatting files via the command line or be able to open your data in an spreadsheet-like program such as Microsoft Excel and do the formatting there. Sometimes programs like Excel struggle with these very large data files so please check before installing a private Xena Hub.
Whether you want to visualize your data on its own or in conjunction with our public data, you can do it securely and easily with Xena.
1. Download your own Xena hub
2. Install hub
Double-click the file and follow the prompts to install the Xena Hub.
3. Load up your data
Double-click on your laptop hub and follow onscreen instructions to load data on your laptop.
Please note it might take a few minutes to load large matrixes (e.g. 60K genes x 10K samples expression matrix), and hours to load large mutation data file (e.g. 45 million whole genome mutations from 10K samples).
3. View on the browser
- Go to Xena Hub Page
- Click on "My computer hub" and click on your data to verify it was loaded.
- Click on the "Visualize" button.

Do you want to view your data in the context of other datasets?
Currently, the easiest way is to use our composite cohort feature, which is currently in beta. You can also combine them offline and load the combined data to your local hub.
